Hello everyone!

I have recently found this acer on a nursery near my home town where I live. It was quite cheap for a tree that has a good thickness so I purchased it. The question is that the variety is a atropurpureum and I heard it’s not the ideal cultivar for bonsai, what do you think?

Regarding the potential of the tree, I see it has 2 well located branches that are visible from the photos and also some at the back. As far as the base, the roots will need some work. So, what do you think? Is it worth giving it a try or do you believe it will be a headache?

If you have any suggestions I’d love to hear them.

Kind regards!

As you mentioned Artopurpureum is not the best variety för bonsai. Leafe size reduction is hard. But they can always be grown for a nice winter silouette.

Looking at the colour and texture makes me think that it may be mislabled. My artopurpureum have a lot more brownish colour, not at all that light green as yours. Not totally sure, but wait until spring and see what you have.
