Right....this is seriously taking over my garden and my life right now haha
I can't seem to to anywhere without acquiring more trees. I got this larch the other day. Not bad at all for £20

And at a friends bbq tonight I was given this nice crab apple. It's around 5 ft tall, the roots are growing out of the pot. Obviously I want to slip pot it into something larger for now and want to start Bonsaiing this once the time is right. Any feedback and tips for this is most appreciated.

I say nice crab apple, by that I meant nice trunk, it's around 60mm thick at the Base.

Yep - hook, line, and sinker.
I wouldn't worry about putting into a larger pot, even if roots are starting to come out the bottom. If the tree's health is good, leave it be until next spring. Something severely pot bound is going to let you know it's in trouble quick.
Your hawthorn looks in good health. You should be able to take care of the crab apple in the same fashion, as they're very closely related.

I want to encourage more growth closer to the bottom of the trunk to help reverse the taper and obviously cut /air layer the top off. I know a chop top can't be done until winter but is there anything I can do to encourage lower back budding?

Yuo. put an air layer on. I find that airlayers result in a lot of sprouting below, in healthy maples.

Thanks for your forever appreciated input. That's a great idea as I want to reduce the height too. :)

Updates
The Hawthorne had a trim and alsl some larger branches from the top late 2016 and was hoping for some budding to appear lower on the trunk. I am looking towards thread grafting now??? Hence the long downwards branch on the right hand side.

The crab apple took the chop in winter and has resulted in some nice back budding and suckers? On the roots.
I was a bit keen and added a wire and snapped a branch so will leave it for this year now. Pleased with this freebie and can visualise a style already.

Also my 3 trunked Juniper I have applied first stage of wiring and shaping

And 2 more junipers

Privet rescued from a sold house. Winter chopping back has produced some lower growth including the "palm of the hand"

Firethorn
Not had great luck with this one. After removal last year from same house as the Privet, it continued growing but I think I messed about with it too soon and 2 of the trunks have lost what little growth they had. Any thoughts or ideas welcomed. Shame but will make nice practice for jin one year.
