I have been given a chinease elm. This is my first bonsai but I think it has a few issues. If anyone can help me then I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance
#roots do not seem stable...hence the paintbrush holding it straight
#some leave are turning brown
#no new growth

Hm.. looks like you have some young leaves there though?
The soil seems very organic, holding a lot of moisture. I would keep it a little on the dry side, but never really dry (!). wet soil = unhappy roots = no well developed rootball = poor growth

I agree, drainage and aeration is key, also you can wire the tree into the pot to make it more stable, getting better soil will help in root formation, this will take a few years tho.
