They can't be inside. They don't like too much organics in the soil. They don't like much water (wet feet). Spider mites love them. They don't need TLC and thrive if left alone.

Kanuma is more acidic than Akadama.
Azaleas love Kanuma, but I don't think Kanuma alone is a good choice for Junipers.

Trick with juniper is lots of light, and little water. Do nt let the substrate go bone dry, but certainly keep them drier thenothers. Make sure you have a substrate trhat drains well. What you use exactly is not relevant. Substrate really is not as complex as some would like you to believe.
