Advice for a novice - Chinese Elm was created by Craig92

Hope someone may be able to help. I was given a Chinese Elm a few months ago as a gift. The leaves began to turn brown and fall off after a month or so and now only a few remain (see attached photo).
I currently have the tree inside, sitting in a windowsill which get direct sunlight for a few hours in the morning. I water twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening if the soil looks dry.
Tree is a bit wobbly in the pot and has some moss growing on the soil surface.
Unsure if I have over/underwatered? Any suggestions for a course of action would be appreciated!

Craig, scratch the bark and see if it's green underneath. If it's not, unfortunately the tree is dead.
