Hello,

My bonsai which was recently sick which has done really well has started to get a few random leaves here and there dying in random places... its not like all in an area or a branch its like a leaf on a branch but all the rest are fine...

They appear to start off fine and then seem to slowly die off and I dont know why its not all the ones facing the light or not in the light or anything just random all over the tree...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hmmm, do you have any pets? That happened to one of my mom's plants, and we didn't know what was going on until we caught one of our cats gnawing on it.

I'm sorry you're having problems with your bonsai. What type of tree is it? What was it sick from previously? What steps did you take to treat it's prior ailment? If you could post some photos of the whole tree and some good quality close-ups of the dying leaves it would really help us to help you. Thanks!

Hi James,
A picture would help enourmously here. I can now make some educated guesses though:

- The roots might be damaged due to irregular watering, resulting in a generally unhappy plant
- You might have bugs in the plant (I am thinking spider mites)
- The tree might have too little ventilation, resulting in fungi

But as said.. A picture would be usefull

I have attatched the best pictures I could as the leaves were in alkward area's or have fallen off...

I did see a little thing moving around but could not get a picture of it and it blended in quite well with the tree so unless something is living on it possibly..

Oooooo....what is going on with the missing bark at the base of the trunk? Is that a recent occurrance? Was there an infection of some sort here? You mentioned that this tree was sick recently. Any details you can share would be helpful, please.

Hello,

Yeah from when it was sick I was told to use a toothbrush so I think that was my fault with that as I did it gently but the brush was not so gentle which was what I had at the time

Okay...now I understand. I went back thru earlier posts to a month ago and this is the tree that had the mold at the base of the trunk.

Hmmmm...I'm really not sure what to do about the trunk base or, if that is related to the yellowing leaves. Hopefully our plant specialist (leatherback) can offer some advice about that.

In the meantime, I would follow his advice in his earlier post here and check for bugs (use a magnifying glass if you have one). Generally you will see most signs on the under side of the leaves but not always. Look for a mass of fine webs and a black peppery spotting on the leaves...this is spider mites. If you see tiny, oblong shapes the colour from light beige to brown to black attached tightly against the spines or veins on the underside of the leaves, this is scale.

I would also suggest going to the main menu of the site (upper left corner of this page), click on "Care" then go to "Pests and Diseases" read the info there. Have you researched this particular tree to find out it's specific needs? That too would be beneficial.
