I experimented and used different pot sizes and soil mixes. This one has hardly grown and indeed, it is now not too healthy anymore.

It was planted in 2014 in a small pot in akadama .

Bonsai are not created by planting seeds in small pots in bonsai soil and trying to keep them small.

That was my guess, 2 years old.
I've been seeing JBP 3/4 yo much bigger than that, grown from seed also.

My shohin Bonsai white pine has been in steady decline. But look! It is backbudding!



Only 70 more years and it will be a gorgeous tree.

It is a tree in a pot so it is a bonsai.

I'm pretty sure you get run out of town for that mentality..
