I recently purchased this bonsai from my trusted garden center. The tree is over 2 ft tall. I am wondering if I should prune heavy this winter?

No. Prune when in full swing and strong. So put it outside for the summer, once the weather allows it again. Let it get explosive with new growth. Then trim around mid-summer (Put in the shade untill new leaves are around!)

One of the main reasons, why I have decided to not get any more tropical plants. they look like this for have the year in climates that have a cold winter. When the spring and summer comes they do ok... but winter is rough on them.

They don't have to, if you maintain them well: www.bonsaiempire.com/forum/progressions/...kea-ficus-for-bonsai
