This is what I use too, I add some kitty litter baked loam too as that dries out less.

Maybe I am misunderstanding this thread but... Good books exist in the bonsai market. PH meters exist, cheap akadama alternartives exist. ?

We use crushed hot fired red bricks in many tropical countries. Sieved, of course.
