I live in Kansas, and my house is poorly insulated. I'm trying to find a hardy tree for either an inside or an outside bonsai. I've been considering some kind of oak. Any other suggestions?

Any tree species local to where you are. Ideally you take plants that have smaller leaves. Oak could work. Zelkove works in most temperate climates. Beech too. Larch if your winters get cold enough.
