Hello! I was gifted this tree by a colleague (I have a beautiful apple blossom bonsai at work that produces the most amazing blooms) to care for now that they have retired. I have been treating it like a bonsai with watering, fertilizer, window/room temp placement etc. and it is starting to flourish. My question is...is it a bonsai? If so, what kind? It needs repotting and I would like to know beforehand to ensure I use the correct soil, etc.
Thank you!

Bonsai is not a type, it is not a tree species.
Your plant is not really a bonsai either - it looks like a long neglected mallsai.
The species is Carmona, and it is suitable for bonsai.
Good that you got it to grow. Continue doing what you're doing
Looks like a veryyyyy leggy Carmona Microphylla.
Could be a bonsai, but now it's totally out of control and I am not really sure if it's worth the effort.
