My bonsia I think died but roots are still alive and growing what do I do?

I don't quite follow- if it's dead it's dead. How do you know the roots are growing?

Because I replanted it in soil I was supposed on first place. Cause I didnt know it was specific type. I starched the tree itself n it was all black. But the roots were just dry. So I soaked them planted them and I pulled it up today and the roots had grown. So the tree itself is dead. So if I cut the tree will new shoot come up?
