I recently dug this tree in southern Wisconsin, I think its aspen, but not sure
also there doesn't seem to be much info on aspen as bonsai.... any advice

Aspen is a type of poplar right? I would guess they are quite short lived for bonsai?
I would say, give it a try and see how you go.
