I suspect the one with the spiky leaves is some kind of juniper, possibly a green mound juniper but am not 100% sure. The other I have no clue at all, I bought it at walmart for like 17 bucks

Thats what I thought at first, but I was a little hesitant to believe walmart would sell that kind of bonsai.

Bonsai is not much more or less than a tree that due to specific care (trimming, wiring, rootwork) gives the impression of a welle stablished mature tree, but in miniature. It is not a species or anything like that; Pretty much all trees can be trained as bonsai (Although some species will never turn into a believable bonsai due to species-specific traits). Typically, bonsai are just ike real old trees pretty unique and differ from the next.

What you get sold in big box stores are mass produced replica's of a bonsai parody one could say. They are plants in pots that received a little bit of trimming and wiring, but need a skilled hand and lots of time to turn into something that is truely bonsai. Bonsai are potted trees. But not all potted trees are bonsai.
