Hello everyone! I got a bonsai tree as a gift couple of months ago and since then I haven't done much besides watering it, and even that I'm not sure if I'm doing right, since the lady at the shop told my cousin that you should pour some water into the container in which the pot is placed and not water it from the top?? I'm not sure if that's the right way to do it. I'll attach couple of photos of my tree so you can help me identify it, as well as the pot it is currently in. I'm not sure if I should re-pot it now or not, something tells me I should...The tree itself seems healthy to me, it even has some new leaves and branches which makes me super happy! Anyways, could you please tell me what my first steps should be? Should I re-pot it into something bigger? Should I cut the leaves so they stay smaller, because I'd like them to be that way, and if so, which ones? I personally like the 'upright formal' style and I was wondering if it is possible to achieve that with the tree I have? When and how should I wire the branches? How do I water it? How do I cut it? What do I do with the roots?? H E L P me...I really feel like I shoud do something for the poor thing and I grew to like it very much...Her name is Saa May, by the way
Thank you!

This is a ficus ginseng... as many here would say, it is not really a bonsai... but, as far as I'm concerned a good starter in learning to care for trees in pots until you are able to work on something better...
Lots of people say lots of things about how to water.... how you water depends mostly on your soil mixture, and then on the plant's location and then on the weather. i.e. how much sun, how warm, how much wind etc. The basic rule of thumb is, that the soil should be allowed to dry out a little bit between waterings... not completely dry, but also not wet.
have a look at the ficus care guide here on bonsaiempire..

It's a shame that it is not considered a Bonsai tree, I wanted one for years..but that doesn't mean I won't keep loving her like I would if she was one
thank you for your reply.

This is the unfortunate way some places portray bonsai. Bonsai is not a species. What you have is a plant that is in an ordinary flower pot and called bonsai just to be able to command a higher price. This species can be successfully turned into an acceptable bonsai but it takes time. As for this plant, watering from the bottom is a bad idea. The lower part will get probably too much and the top too little. Water from the top and each time allow to almost dry before watering thoroughly. It does not need re potting yet, leave it until you are used to keeping it alive and growing. You could prune some of the longer growths but it is not essential.

In your 3rd picture notice the lowest new shoot. It's the Original foliage of the roots on which the top foliage is grafted on.
Like I showed many times before already, this is what I did to my wall-mart ficus: shumibonsai.wordpress.com/2018/08/18/the-funky-ficus-project/
