Acer palmatum watering and strange leaves was created by royalhero

Hello to this great community!

I’m here to ask again question over my acer palmatum. I own it since a couple of year now and I always struggle to maintain foliage until the end of the season. As you can see from the picture leaf tips are already burn and we are only in May.
I water every day. I re-potted previous spring to a full akadama with lava rocks for drainage. I water until I’m able to see water flushing out from drain holes.

Is this a correct sign of underwater or something else?
The bonsai is exposed to the sun from 9am to 2pm but living in north Europe it’s not so strong.

I really would like to see those leaf change color in autumn but I always can’t since they fall before that.

Last but not least... for the first time I saw those group of leaves as the picture. They even had a brighter violet color which looked like a flower. What is it?

Thanks!

Could be wind damage
Could be overfertilizing.
Could be fungal but unlikely

How do you fertilize?

Those "leaves" are seed pods.

I use Abrakas solid fertilizer 4-6-2 in the right quantity (ca 12 of those 15mm rocks) if I translated correctly the japanase package instructions :cheer:

Wind might be indeed the culprit here as the tree is exposed to it but I can’t protect it and I’m afraid I don’t have an alternative place

So nothing suggest I’m watering wrong right?
Should I take out those leaves or wait until they fall?

Oh thanks!
How do I know when they are ready to be collected/used?

It is a little hard to tell, as many things can cause leaves to go brown. If you have not sprayed with fertilizer and you water well I would go for the wind.

Seeds are ready when the stem starts to dry out in fall. As you have a plant which is struggling I would however remove the seeds as it takes a bit of energy for the plant to produce.

Some people report akadama breaking down in some climates. We got a lot of rain here this year and it seems most if the trees were sitting in mud at the bottom of the pot. You said full akadama last year and it might be worth checking to see if it has broken down.
