Hi hi. I just got given this bonsai and need advice on where to go from here. There's an overload of info out there but I've got a relatively skinny elm. I love and dont want to ruin this. Please advise re potting etc? I know the general waterering schedule so should be ok on that front

first thing to know.. Elms are plants. Plants do best outdoors, as long as the weather is good enough. It seems like this plant is inside. Why is that? Do you get extreme weather (Say, colder then -5, -10 in winter)?

MOST problems people have, stem from wrong growing conditions:

- Lack of light
- Too warm in winter
- Too little / Too much water

I live in an apartment with no outside area Best I can do is near a window with afternoon light or by a window with morning light.

Do you advice on pruning etc?

Dont do any prunning the first year. Just try to keep the plant alive, which will prove to be hard enough keeping it inside.

Hint: the tree would love if you could provide winter dormancy, which means a period of one or a few months in winter below 10 degrees celsius.

Maybe you could make a box to hold the tree with one side open, put that side in an open window, tape and seal all the cracks, and then the tree would get the dormancy it needs. Make the box of double pane glass and you can see the tree while it winters.

There are numerous issues here, including possible resistance from significant others.

I have no idea what expenses would be.
