First Timer - Chinese Elm dropping leaves was created by Scott631

First timer here. I purchased a ~12 year old Chinese Elm about 2 months ago - for the first 2 weeks I had it inside in a South facing window but quickly realized it wasn't going to be getting enough light. I moved it outside on our patio table - east facing and I noticed a good amount of growth. The new leaves were larger than the existing which I'm assuming has to do with amount of light the tree is getting compared to the lighting it had in the green house of the grower?

I've pruned the new growth several times but recently it seems like leaves are turning yellow and dropping and I'm not seeing as much new growth. I do some some spots under the leaves, but don't see anything moving.

I'm not noticing any obvious spider mites or other pests. There are some spider webs I see in the morning around the tree, but not sure that's related to actual mites?

I'm trying to stay on top of watering - checking the top to see if it's dry then watering until I see it run out of the bottom. Up until this last week it has been more rainy here than normal, few times I moved it out of the rain thinking it might be getting too much. We're located on Long Island, NY.Any help would be great.

Thank you!

The tree looks healthy to me. It is normal that trees shed old leafs. Just remove the yellow leafs and relax.

Thank you, is this a daily occurrence usually? Seems like I have at least 5 yellow leaves daily and some of the branches are bare.

It looks fine to me. Try calling the merchant where you purchased it and ask them about plant care and fertilization. You can even ask if they can recall when they fertilized it last. Most plant shops and nurseries would give you advice.

stop trimming.
Plants need to grow to stay healthy. Pruning it several times in a 2 month period means that any time you see something growing, you cut it off. THat is detrimental to health.

In open substrate, rain is perfect. Let it get as much as you get.

Thank you, I've laid off the trimming for the past several weeks.
