Why is my moss on my bonsai turning yellow?! was created by ZonderVold

Hello,

I have recently bought a rock juniper bonsai as my first bonsai. It is currently about 5 years old at the time I bought it.

Recently, most of my moss near the trunk of my bonsai turned a yellowish tint. As this is my first bonsai, I am not sure why. I water it every other day when it is dry and I do daily misting. Although the moss isn't directly linked to my bonsai, I'd still like to keep the moss alive and the moss might be showing some future issue (for example, too much or too little watering) with my bonsai that it is not yet showing. I normally leave my bonsai out in the sun for about 5-6ish hours

I have searched through Google but I've mainly found conflicting results, whether it is over watered, underwatered, not enough moisture, too much sunlight, etc. I've also tried searching the forums but I've found mine to be in a different situation.

When I first got this bonsai, it was delivered from another state, although I am not sure which state, I can say that in my state, there is little humidity. Could the possible drop in humidity have something to do with my bonsai's moss changing color? Could I be leaving my bonsai out for too long in the sun?

Perhaps this is a silly question, but I'd still like to ask since I am new to bonsai caring.

Thank you!

Moss can not grow in dry conditions. Do you have any moss growing naturally around you? If not, you will not succeed growing it on your bonsai.

Junipers should be kept outdoors all the time.

It seems like only some times of moss grows in my area. Should I remove the moss or keep it in there?

I keep my bonsai outside 24/7.

Moss is only ornamentation, if it dries, just remove it (if you want), the sun is more important. :D
Maybe it can still form moss, if your place is mossy during colder seasons, or you can just attach some when colder and see what happens.

Is the rootball covered with it?

I checked and I mainly saw soil rather then the rootball, but I am guessing that it does cover some part of the section.

Should I cover the area that the moss was in with gravel? Or what should I do to the area that I will remove the moss from?

Thank you.

You can fill it up or leave it as is. Not an important choise for the tree just for your own viewing pleasure. So do what you like.
