Helloooo. So as previously stated i bought a new indoor bonsai that was a chinese elm. After being on this site for five minutes i waited for the last frost and higher temps and put him outside immediately.

Thing is. It was still quite cold when i moved him, and at the time he was growing rampantly with new buds and shoots everywhere. Shortly after moving him out, the new growth turned dark and growth in itself stopped. We also had an unexpected frost last night. Its may here now and about to warm up, and he was in the ‘cold’ for about two months i guess. The leaves are still green and he looks healthy so i’m not worried about that, but my question is has he gone into dormancy and have i ruined this years hrowing period, or will he wake up again as it gets warmer.

I think it will continue growing as soon as it heats up. Chinese elms are very hardy.

So.. tell us. It should have been growing loads of branches since you last posted. Has it?

No….but it’s not dead either i think.

My Elm hated being inside. Little growth and leaves falling off. Put it outside and its thrived. Its been snowed on and dealt with English winter. Elms are super Hardy and will thank you for not being near central heating.

English winter is a bit different to a norwegian one, -20 for a couple of months is great fun! But they’ve been outside for teo months now and i think i’m starting to see some new buds coming now

Norway is big and many different conditions. If you are in the southern coastal parts as most norwegians the tree should be outside all year.

I am in Western Sweden by the way. -20 is not a problem for chinese elms short term.

Buds beginning to explode everywhere on them both as of today, with some nice back budding going on too. so not dead just a bit slow to get going

Also got some apple tree seedlings there that are doing quite nicely
