I have a Hawaiian Umbrella Tree Bonsai. I have had it since 2018/9. I have managed to keep it alive this long. I have keep it watered and give it fertilizer once a couple weeks. I have trimmed it on a non-regular basis. I have never re-potted the plant. I don't know if I should do it. I don't want to kill it. The tree is getting unruly and I would like to trim and shape so it looks good, but I don't want to cut too much and kill it. I dont know how to do neither. I am not sure which issue I should tackle first. I need help and guidance. I can provide photos to help with providing guidance. I want to care my plant better but I am scared I will kill it.

Do the plant needs repotting? If the drainage is bad your first priority is repotting.

You can cut quite a lot on schefflera without any harm and they will backbud easily.

Our local club has work sessions on Saturdays that anyone can come to, bering a tree (or several), and ask questions. You can walk around and ask why someone is wiring this or trimming that. This is a very good way to learn exactly what you want to learn.
