Hello,

I'm from England and have just recently been given a bonsai as a gift to look after it because the owners have gone back to Hong Kong. I have had it for just over a month now but I did not know what to do with it as to watering, fertilizing and care until I found this site a short while ago. However, I do not know what species it is and I think that it may be dying if not dead. I do have the bonsai next to a window. The room can get a little humid sometimes.

This is what my bonsai looks like. The leaves may look green, however they aren't it's just because of the lighting on my camera which made the leaves look greener than they are. The leaves are brown and very pale green now.

Please can you help identify and/or give advice. If it is dead then please could you give me some advice as to another species of bonsai that I could get that would be suited to an average temperature of around 20*C.

I'm a first time carer of a bonsai.

it is hard to tell by the pics but it looks to be a satzuki azalea. it looks to need more light and less water .
i have one that is doing much of the same it tried to flower but was too weak. it is just now starting to bud lower on the branches.
if it is an azalea it is an outside plant and will need to go trough a dormancy period in winter. any more advanced advice would be a crapshoot from me seeing ive only had mine for a year and am still trying to figure out good growing procedures.hope this helps alittle im positive someone else will chime in with more info

It looks like that tree has been kept indoors. Are all of it's leaves brown?

Yes it was indoors as I didn't know where else to have it as it said to have it indoors on the label. Yes most of the leaves are either brown or light green.

put it outside in an area that's mostly shaded. leave it outside and only water it when the soil is dry.Once you see new growth increase the sunshine it gets a little each day. When you see new growth, you can start a weak fertilizing regiment.

not to contradict but thats what i did ( put it in the shade) and it did even worse. if it is still alive it will need some sun to get its juices flowin again.

The only reason I say shade is if you put an indoor tree directly into sunshine without acclimating it it will burn and be worse off,but you are right, trees need sunshine.

Aren't azalea's shade loving bushes to begin with? Both of mine in the garden are under the shade of trees and don't mind at all.
