Help with tree rescue please was created by neohippie

Hi Guys, I'm new here so please be gentle.

My neighbour was going to throw away his pot grown Beech tree so I decided to step in and rescue it.

It is about 2 feet tall with good trunk and branch structure so it is a very nice material (in my inexperienced opinion anyway, lets just say I like it...). Unfortunately for the tree my neighbour rather rudely took the tree out of his 15ltr pot and just put it in plastic bag a week ago. Soil is bone dry and it looks root bound.

I know autumn is not the best time to repot and shape tree but under those circumstances I think the best I can do to save it now is to repot it and hope it will survive the winter, what do you think?

What type of pot should I put it in now?

Hi

Soak the roots in a bucket of water for a few hours, then I would use a slightly larger pot than the rootball, fill around with a decent compost and just water well and hope for the best.
Keep in a shady spot if you can until it recovers - good luck with this.

it's brave of you to do this, but it can be rewarding, imagine you having a great bonsai tree and you remember it was trown away, left to die but you saved it and made it into a beautiful bonsai.

Don't do anything to roots or branches. Just soak the tree, as mentioned above. Use lukewarm water, rather than cold: It will more easily penetrate the roots. If you have access to a garden, place it in the garden in a well-ventilated, light spot, but protected from anything but early morning or very late afternoon direct sun. Then pray and hope. If spring brings buds it will live. Does it still have leaves now? Then your chances are pretty good.
