Leaf turning brown when kept in interior was created by jdiaz.he

I have had a bonsai hinoki for 4 months which I put it in the interior of my appartment near to a window and good air. About 3 weeks ago leaves started to turn brown (winter season starting on december) and some fall out while they were still partially green. Temperature for the last weeks has been between 12 to 18 celsius degrees. Some expert told me that I have to take my Hinoki to the outside urgently, so yesterday I moved it to my balcony. I usually irrigate every 3 days, and every 4 days lately, since the soil keeps more humidity now. Can anyone give me any advice? I l'm from Queretaro, Mexico.

I am attaching a previous and a recent picture.

Thanks! I appreciate any help

Jose Luis

Hi Jose,

you live in my most favorite city in Mexico! I love Queretaro!

That being sad.. i am afraid your tree is almost certainly dead. Whoever told you that the tree should eb outside was right. But I am not convinced this is what killed it. Hard to tell what did though. It could be some root-issue combined with dry winds of sorts. But from the small picture you showed us, I would not keep my hopes up for this plant :|

Welcome to the forum!

Sadly the tree you showed us is dead, there is no chance it's still alive, sorry! :(

Conifers like this one typically don't show they are dying, untill they pretty much are dead. It is hard to tell from a picture how much life is still there. but even if it is not completely death now, it really is most of the way there.

so you know for future referance i hinoki cypress are a more northern climate tree they need winter dormancy to survive. seeing you are in mexico sub freezing temps dont come around too often .next time try a sub tropical or tropical species that is more suited for your environment

Thank you good to know. However its strange that when winter came around the tree started to change leaves color. Not sure what happened, it was in perfect condition when hotter and dryer temperatures. Wish I had seen this portal before. Thank you all.

the tree basically ran out of energy that is the reason trees go into dormancy.it needed a rest but it wasn't cold enough to "sleep"

Nope. Trees go in dormancy because the circumstances are not suitable for growth and/or they loose the ability to keep part (leaves) aliove during cold/dry periods. It has nothing to do with 'running out of energy'
