I have no experience with Bonsai but have always found them remarkable. I am planning on acquiring my first tree now. I have researched many species and want something that will thrive in my Zone (South Carolina,U.S., Zone Eight). I am looking towards an indoor plant since I don't get a lot of sun at my home and would likely bring it to work during the day for full sun. What species would you experienced folk recommend? Thank you and I look forward to many years of happy growing seasons!

Only a few species do well indoors for long periods of time. The most easily found would be a
		ficus microcarpa
aka ficus retusa aka ginseng ficus. Most of the other plant species sold (even as indoor bonsai) prefer to be outdoors for most of the year.

Thanks. I have been searching around my local nurseries for a ficus as that was one of the most commonly mentioned indoor bonsai species. As I will be buying one from a nursery, I assume it is best advised to repot right away with bonsai soil and in a bonsai pot..right?

Mwa.. I think repotting ficus is highly overrated. Ficus do not put high demands on soil. And the typical ficus bonsai you will find is just a houseplant, which can grow in normal potting soil.

Thanks for going the extra mile and looking around my local area! I appreciate that. I hope to be visiting a nursery within the week so see what's out there. I would prefer to search for stock than to order online right away. I have ordered some supplies and awaiting delivery so I can get started.
