I have heard about a technique called needle reduction for pines. Does anyone have any advice or information on how to do this to a mugo pine or even if a mugo pine can undergo needle reducation. Pines are a new thing for me, I found some information on needle reduction for black pines but I also know that no two species react to the the same technique the same way.

Pine Bonsai Pruning: www.bonsai4me.com/AdvTech/ATPine%20Pruning.html

Mugo Pine In Depth: www.bonsai4me.com/AdvTech/ATMugo%20Pines%20Indepth.htm

The first link above goes more into needle reduction on the second page. The second link mainly just covers Mugo specific needs and differences from other pine species.

Good luck! I don't have any pine as of yet. I want to give myself a couple more years of experience before trying since I heard they are a bit difficult.

feed as little as possible, very low on nitrogen, and only start feeding after the first new flush has hardened off.
the more you feed (especially N) the longer the needles.

Depending in what country you are in thr needled can be reduced in length in July, that is what I do. Obviously, fertiliser is important. The age and stage in developement also has a bearing. Young trees or trees being styled do not need the needles to be reduced so soon.
