beginner! was created by holly

I bought this tree a week ago but it didn't have any id tags on it. I bought it from a generic gardening shop. This looked like the best wee one.

All I know is that it is 4yrs old.

I've been watering it when the soil dries and cutting away any dead/dying leaves.

Any advice on what type of tree it is and improving it's overall look would be appreciated!

For some reason my reply didn't post!

These are the only two other pictures I have. I think it might be a lingustrum(sp?)? It looks a bit like a tiny hedge.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I think Ligustrum may be right - it looks similar to one I was given recently. Best advice I can give: make sure it's in decent free draining soil, very often they are imported in really poor stuff and pot bound to boot, should be hardy in all but the coldest conditions and really should be outdoors or in a cold greenhouse as maximum light is essential and it won't thrive, in fact may not even survive, if kept indoors for any length of time. Can't advise on styling, just suggest you read all you can on this and other forums, and remember that it's far easier to chop bits off than to grow them back!

Hi,

I hope it doesn't die because it is an anniversary gift!
Unfortunately I can't keep it outdoors. Ground floor flat in Glasgow! It'll just get stolen and destroyed.

So far we've been keeping it on the window ledge and it seems to be doing ok. Lots of new growth! In the Spring we'll pop it in a bigger pot etc, if we still have it!

Holly,
Ok on the location. Keep it in the window, in your kitchen if you can, and not over a heat source. Water when it needs it, check every day, and once you are used to how often it dries out, you will know when to water. Use a chopstick to see when it is dry, then water thoroughly, not a dribble.
Have a look at bonsai4me.com for species guides. It is a British site and one of the best.
Geoff.

if this is ligustrum you should be ok...it is an evergreen plant with 50 or so speicies . some are southern living plants and they are very shade tolerant so it sounds suitable for indoor living...misting the tree will help keep the humidity up in the leaves ...water when needed and give it sun...best of luck and keep us posted
