Hi All,
I have just joined the forum so please forgive me for any mistakes.
I live in the U.K. and about nine months ago I was given a bonsai but had no idea what type it was or how to care for it . Having just done some research on the site I think I have identified it as a Hinoki Cypress (photo attached),it is about fifteen inches in height and it has been kept indoors however I have recently noticed that the leaves are beginning to turn dark brown and die off.

I have not over watered it and have given it a good quality bonsai food but this does not seem to have helped ,it has also recently been re-potted into a larger pot and moved outdoors into a sunny position.

Could I seek your help and ask if this tree is indeed an outdoor type and how can I bring it back to life ?

could be an Hinoki.. but i fear i'm more likely a dead Hinoki..
by the time trees like this turn brown, you're probably already months too late.. but you never know.. place it outdoors and let it rest.. if possible, plant it in the garden without touching the roots..preferably in a mostly shady place or a place without direct sunlight

most important tip:

next time, don't wait untill your tree is almost dead befor you start to look for info.. rather look for info before you get the tree..

btw: might sound harsh, but that shrub is anything but a bonsai.. nor will ever be possible to make a bonsai out of it.. (unless you have crazy skills, but than you won't bother with projects like this..)

if you like bonsai, look up some info on this site and other sites like bonsai4me.com
check what you like, how much time you wish to spend on it, how much money you want to spend on it, get some guidance from a club or something..

This is a tree that you should most certainly keep outdoors. A probable cause for the browning of its leaves is the fact that it has been kept indoors. Also, if it was recently repotted I suggest you keep it in a semi-shaded enviroment and not in a direct sunlight, that is at least for the first 3 or 4 weeks after repotting. Also, water it regularly, don´t let the roots get dry.

Probably a false cypress (Chamaecyparis), but not a Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa)
