Trunk damage

Hi there. I have a jade bonsai that I keep outside in the summer with my other houseplants (I live in Wisconsin). Last night I discovered that a critter (probably a squirrel) was eating the trunk! It is almost girdled, but there is a very small amount of bark remaining on one section. I put hardware cloth around the tree, to prevent any further damage - that's the wires you see in the pictures.
Should I leave my tree alone and see if it heals, or is there something I can do to help it?

No idea how deadwood looks on a crassula, but if it appears nice, the culprit may have come in handy.
It probably will heal over eventually. (I hope so).
Sure it wasn't the gnome?
