Hi all,

Last year I visited Japan and as a souvenir I bought two small pots and two type of bonsai seeds (at least, that's what they were called). One type of seeds didn't sprout, the other all did. So I repotted half of them in the other pot, just so they look nice together. This was all in the beginning of this year or so. Can't remember exactly when I started them but less then a year. They stand in the windowsill, I water them occasionally and they have between 6-2 hours of (direct) sun, and lot's of light from outside.

I thought to give proper care for them and so went online to look up information. This website has great information, but I don't know the species and how to take care of them. Willing to invest some time in it but wondering if you can help identify what I have so to give them the right care.
I tried translating the note that came with it but no luck with a species name.

Thanks in advance!

There is no such thing as a 'type of bonsai' plant. Bonsai seed does not exist.
Bonsai is an artform and a technique, not a tree type. Your plants are NOT bonsai.

These plants are pines. They belong outside, not inside; they will surely not survive being indoors.
Put them in proper pots, each one separately, and let them grow for a couple of years.
Meanwhile, study the basics (see "The Basics", top of the page). This will also teach you when to repot.

Turning these trees into real bonsai requires a lot of knowledge and time - and will take a couple of decades.

Hi Auk,

Thank you for your reply. Sounds to me like a very harsh way of interacting with someone new here. But I obviously do not know all the Lingo yet and sorry to offend anyone with my poor knowledge of Bonsai.
Thank you for taking the time to answer. I will take your advice to heart and get these tree's outside.

Hello yoswa
i am a newbie too but i have been on this site for a few month now .
i understand that you think that auk is being harsh but you have to understand him aswell as he has to tell hindreds of newbies each day that bonsai is not a tree species and that you cant just make a bonsai in a day or two . I had to learn that lesson too and i always stay humble as people like auk are real experts of the arts and in time you can learn alot from them . Just try to look up a few things for yourself and give these guys a break lol
kind regards
nico

Thanks Nico,
As I said, I understand, even though I'm one of a hundred I thanked him for his time and stayed polite the whole time :) Just describing what I felt as an outsider. And all understandable!

They should let all these people that sell these things explain as how to sell this then, that's where the frustration comes from.
I'm happy to have received this information now all together.

You really need to explain to me where the harsh bit is in my reply.

You have got that right - that it is frustrating. What you got wrong though is that there is no need to explain to them how to sell it. They know perfectly well what they are selling. Yes, they do know bonsai seed does not exist and yes, they know that the juniper cutting they put in a pot with decorative rocks, stones and figurines is not bonsai.

It's all about the money... people buy it, so they sell it.
