I planted a small apple tree in a pot, it's only a few months old and about 15 cm in height. And I was wondering what would be the steps to turn it into a bonsai.

Note of warning.. This will be a VERY long road. Think decades, not months..

Step two: Decide what you want your tree to look like in 20 years
Step three: start reading. Lots. A lot has been written down.

By the time you are done, say, in a decade or so.. I am sure you will know how to create a good canopy.

I would advice to also get a somewhat more mature plant, while you wait for this one to put on some weight.

Time flies and I do not mind it taking a decade or two before having a showcase .

For the time being I 'll just leave it to grow and in November or so I'm thinking of cutting it back to around 25 cm or so. Or...at least, I think that would be a nice height for the tree.

Did you notice the links in the post? Cutting back is not always the first step.. Bonsai are, oddly enough, created from much bigger plants.
