Hello, my family got this juniper in our garden for a long time now but my mom wants to remove it and plant something else on its place.
Im going to attach some pictures. Im wondering if it is collectable and if it could be trained as a bonsai later on.

Thanks in advance

Looks ok to me.

Where are you, season wise?

If in fall, i would this weekend cut all the roots around the plant, at maybe 50cm from the trunk. Just take a spade and put it straight into the ground in a circle around the trunk. Do not try to go underneath. Then add some mulch and fertilizer on the soil so the soil keeps moist and ntrient richt. This eill push the tree to grow more roots near the trunk. Then, once wint is ver and you see new growth on the plant, carefully take the tree from the ground, and into a container. Manwhile, read up on collecting trees for bonsai, ask specific questions and you should be ready for this in spring. Asking a friend at a local bonsai club to help may be usefull tol.

Thank you for the tip. It really helped the tree grow some fresh roots close to the surface.

I managed to get the tree out and plant it in a container. Some pics will follow.

I know its nothing special, but I think it is very good to practise repotting, keeping it healthy, wiring/shaping the tree, do some jin and shari etc.
of course not all at once, I repotted it and now I leave it for a good 2-3 years

Is that A juniper and am I seeing it right that many of the trunks have no foliage?
What's your plan with that? Jin them?

You see it right. Half of the branches are dead. Im planning to jin them and/or remove some of it or parts of branches.
The left side has a quiet dense foliage on the other hand, im planning to cascade them and thin them out . But I'll have time thinking about solutions. First things first: keeping it healthy!
What do you think?

Keeping it healthy, taking your time, jinning the dead branches, trying cascade style - all makes sense.
The foliage seems pretty far at the end of the long trunks/branches so not sure how this will work out, but it'll be an interesting project.

Thinks the same. Its the main reason I almost believe its not suitable for bonsai. But yeah, some wiring and shaping and maybe a nice jin would replace the lack of the foliage near the trunk. I also have few little branches with a very little foliage close to the trunk. I might work on them, but they will not grow fast that is for sure
