:huh: I purchased a Bonsai tree at a local nursery even though I thought I would most likely kill it. It was not cheap. My daughter prompted me to buy it. I can't remember how many years ago this was (probably at least seven) but it thrived. Then I went to Europe and left it with a neighbor (because it required watering twice a week and I was gone for a month). She killed it. I lost my daughter in 2011. I really want another Bonsai tree like it (I have not been able to forgive that neighbor, how stupid to not be able to follow simple instructions!) The tree seemed to resemble the Hinoki Cyrpess (leaves were pointy by in lacey design). I don't know where to purchase another one. I have my daughter's Orchid which flowers non-stop nine months out of twelve (very rare for an Orchid) and has just grown two new leaves and put up a new flower stalk, I'm afraid to bring a new plant into that space with that Orchid. Any suggestions on where to buy one online? TY

I understand why you want a similar tree. Could you tell us a bit more about how you took care of it?
Junipers do not belong indoors and that you only watered it twice a week is surprising. In summer, I have to water my bonsai daily.

If you want another tree like it, can you tell what it looked like - size/height, shape? Do you maybe have a photo?

Personally, I would not buy a tree on line easily - though there are exceptions.

TY so very much for trying to help. I have two attachments, both from online trying to identify the tree type. It was definitely closer in appearance to the Hinoki Cypress seen in this photo although not at all "bushy" (that is terribly "full") ; Its leaves looked like the Hinoki in the attached file, not full but almost "twirled" and "lacy". I do not have a photo of my particular tree. It was always inside. My terrace (the only full "window" my plants can fit into) faces Southeast. My Orchid loves this exposure and the few cacti and succulents I have do, also. I watered that Bonsai twice weekly, Wednesday and Sunday, all year around. The sun it got was mid-morning (and through double paned glass such as is used on terrace doors). The Orchid would not tolerate any full sun but the other plants seem fine with this even though they had been in a Southern exposure window before I moved It was a small Bonsai, perhaps 7 to 8 inches high. I actually trimmed it before going to Europe September 2014 (its leaves seemed to be getting a little "leggy" and it took the trimming quite well). The photos I found of the Hinoki Cypress Bonsai online (in places that sell them) did not really resemble the one I attached. Any further help would be greatly appreciated. There is a nursery near me where I believe I could order one, should I know which one to order. TY again. (The second attachment is a Juniper, closest I could come after the Hinoki)

Hm. Quite hard to give you good advice. I cannot recommend buying any juniper and keeping it indoors. Junipers belong outside and need to go through their dormancy period. Also your watering schedule is not the way bonsai junipers are being normally watered.

I'm not sure what the first juniper is. The second one looks like a Chinese juniper. A Hinoki has fan-shaped foliage, like this:

If I read it correctly, you said you lost your daughter in 2011. I'm very sorry.
It seems you have a good reason to endeavor in bonsai again.
If I were you, I would buy all a few books, do some reading and choose 1 species to begin again.

TY no my tree did not look like the photo you imbedded. It had twirled leaves, sort of lacy, but nothing like that. Maybe it was a Juniper? I'd really have to see it in person to know and I'm unsure how to do that, where to do that. I can't go back to the place I bought the original one from, there are a lot of places I can never go again. I'll just keep trying! Ty so much

Well I've done a lot of online research and frankly I have never been able to keep a Bonsai tree alive, except for that one. Can you suggest one, possibly? An easy keeper? And then I can ask the nursery where I bought the Fat Albert Blue Spruce for my church (it's in the ground on the great lawn, it's their new Christmas tree). I think that nursery can get anything! Could you please check the 'Tree Species', 'Identify my tree', under Conifers, and let me know what's the closest match?

OK I've looked very closely at all. Leaf pattern looks like Cedar (Cedrus) but it was never as "full" as the one in the photo. I think you might notice (if you compare photos) that the "leaf appearance" is similar to the Hinoki Cyprus (at least in the photo). It could also have been Sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera) since leaf proliferation is more scant than Cedrus. I'd have to see it in person but I wouldn't know where to do that. Of the two (Cedrus and Sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera) which one should I purchase and do you know an on-line site that will deliver a living tree or should I ask the florist or the nursery I know of in Rhinebeck to get me one?
