Lance, the whole top section that snapped off is about one third of the trunks length; it is 6" (15 cm)long and only 3/8" (4 mm) wide at the point where it broke off...very little to work with and extremely brittle.
To answer your question, there is no dead wood left on the trunk...there is a live branch just below the point where it snapped. There are however, two small and very thin branches left on the tree that I believe are also dead; you can see them in the photos.
