Hi all,

I'm new to bonsai, and picked up an indoor chinese elm about a month ago. I've been watering it once a week and spraying daily, and for the first couple of weeks it seemed fine.

Recently it has been dropping leaves at what seems like an alarmingly quick rate, and I've noticed some white spots on the bark which seem to wash off.

I've checked under the bark and I've still got a green layer, which I believe to be a good sign.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking some sort of fungus perhaps but I'm not at all sure.

I think you need to post pictures.

You realize the tree needs bark? Do not pull it of to see whether "it is green". It tells you asbolutely nothing.

Welcome.
There's no such a thing as an "indoor elm", as trees belong outdoors.
But your tree is sick; soil is not the best, watering system seems wrong, and I think it lacks sunlight.
Put it outside, water when the underside of the soil is dryish, for now put it in open shade, and let's hope it survives.

I agree with the comments beneath your post: PUT IT OUTSIDE. Whatever 'additional' problems it might have, you'll get no favourable results by keeping it indoors. It would be like putting a band-aid on a dirty, festering, infected sore.
