In sweden the term organic does not exist in other meaning than the strict biological. For products that are grown without poison and chemical fertilizers in a more sustainable way the term ecological is used. In order to call products ecological one must first adapt production for 5 years and then apply for a licence. When having a licence one gets reviewed at least once a year and needs to show documentation for everything used in produktion. It is even prohibitet to use manure from non certified cattle on the growing fields. That off course drive cost and price up compared to non certified production.

Interesting, but maybe not a topic for a bonsai forum?

The reason I jumped in was that we get comments from time to time saying only organic fertilizer and in the US that is not meaningful.

Sounds like Sweden does it right.
