I am having a gnat problem. So far am using vinegar with soap to attract them away from my bonsais, also kills them. Am letting the plants get drier. All my bonsais are indoor. Gnats dislike several different essential oils. Has anyone tried using diluted essential oils as a lite spray on the top soil layer. I don't have a tree that I can risk trying this on. Anyone have a tree to try it on? How do other growers keep the gnats away?

Thank you, Can send solution mix if one member might want to try this.

Gnats will not harm your trees. It is a sign that the soil is poor, so get that right and the Gnats will mot be there.

Yellow sticky traps.
+
Topmost soil a fine layer of pure sand.
+
Neem oil diluted as per label to drench the soil once or twice.

Keep the organic soil dryish, that's why they show up in the first place.

I have been watering till it runs thru the bottom drain holes. i'll try backing that off some. Sounds good.

Thanks again

That's the right way to do it. You can try and wait a bit longer before watering again. Let the soil dry a bit between waterings, but do not let it dry out.
