I've noticed lately the foliage is gradually turning brown. I water regularly and when the soil feels damp. It's out in full sun so not sure what the problem could be.I think the soil is quite compact and retains water very easily, I've noticed some moss growing on the surface of the soil, so perhaps the soil is too moist and has poor drainage. Is this anything of concern?

Seems to me like it is not a juniper, but a chmeacyparis.

The browning what I see is normal aging of the stems. Old scales turn brown and drop off at some point, leaving only the branch.

Is there a drainage hole on the bottom of that pot?

Yes after some Google rearch I think I have a hinoki cypress :)
Seems like needle Browning is normal, not sure why it could be happening in the middle of summer here (I'm in australia).

Yep that pot has a drainage hole at the bottom.
