Hi
New to this site so Hello to everyone.
I have a problem with a field maple. On close inspection I noticed small green caterpillars (about 1cm long) in between the leaves, not many about 5. I have a lot of browned and dieing leaves. There looks to be insect tracks on some them. I have removed the dead and dying leaves and have sprayed with insecticide. Has anyone any thoughts on this please. Many thanks for your time.
Cheers
Andy

It was most likely just caterpillars.

"The leaves are eaten by the caterpillars of several species of moth, including the sycamore moth, the mocha, the maple pug, the small yellow wave, the prominent and the maple prominent."

That's if you live in the UK. If you live somewhere else, it could have been other species.

It would be usefull to see a picture of what is happening to your tree. Browning leaves can have a whole load of causes, ranging from you rplant being on the brink of death, through a fungal infection to ageing of foliage. Impossible to tell without seeing the tree.

Hi leatherback
I have attached some photos that I took yesterday before I removed affected leaves. I did have a fungal problem about a month back which I treated with fungicide. I also moved the tree into a more airer position.
Thanks for you reply.

Could it be that the new psition is also sunnier? It looks like youhave sunburn on the leaves. Leaves infected with milldew can die off too.

Looks like some sort of pest to me?. Have you tried a mild insecticide?

Hi
The position is sunnier but not intense and all day. Sunburnt leaves? I avoid getting the leaves wet in the day time.
Cheers Andy.

Jeez, did I just looked at the pictures and not read the post? I must have gotten distracted at work, while being distracted from work at bonsai forums; double distraction; twilight zone, not good. Apologies.
