I have been growing an acer palmatum and acer palmatum butterfly for nearly a year. The trees are in the 3-5 year range and are still in plastic flower pots. I was impressed that they grew an extra 20-25 % over the growing season. However, upon looking at the new growth it seems to have died back. The energy and vigour of the tree are not at the tips anymore.
With that, some of the branch ends have turned white and I have had to cut them off. This growing season I want all growth to stay on and was hoping if you know how to do that?
It is a sign of root problems and or plants that have not gone dormant early enough and or frost damage. The plants in the ground in my gardens suffered some die back too, as well as one in a very large container. Keeping them in winter on the dry side and out of frosty wind should help
