Harry Harrington seems to agree with this summer or late summer repotting technique on conifers (at least as Mugo Pines are concerned).

Although I suspect that this is susceptible to be extended to other conifers... As Junipers possibly.

so in my area seems like im looking to repot around may or august. if done in any other month between that we are looking at 100+ degree weather here. most of what i read written up in my area talks about late april through may.

update on this juniper. got around to chopping/ potting the air-layer which took very well and is now sitting in a nursery container. re-potted the tree but as i bought some similar trees most a little smaller im debating on maybe using this one with the new ones ive purchased and making up a forest with 5 trees since this tree has a long thin trunk, still have some years to decide since the other trees still need lots of work. as of now i will work on refining the pads and working the jin up top.

Quite interesting.
I guess the upper branches need to be shorter, to give this tree a chance to resemble a real pine, but of course you got to wait for back budding closer to the mais trunk to do that (prune them shorter).

yes, i pruned them back last year and got a few buds. but lets see how this growing season goes. hoping for the best cause it does look a little funky as it stands.

Have you considered bringing the left top branch up, as a new trunk? (Do NOT do this now as bending branches damages them, and you could just kill a branch by manipulating too much, wait a few weeks IF you want to do this.).

thats not a bad idea, never thought of that. but with the truck being so straight wouldn't that give me movement i dont want up top?

so at the moment ive had lots of back budding and the tree is looking great after repotting 2 months ago with vigorous growth. since i re-potted about 2 months ago would now be a good time to do some pruning? or would it be safer to wait till later in the season? seems like the tree has recovered quit well and i want to start bringing down the pads a lot smaller up top and the lower pad by about half. will post pictures as soon as i get home today.

Looks nice and healthy, I like the style a lot. It will be stunning in a few seasons.
