Spring!

Wow, you are weeks ahead of me. I only have the first green tips!

What is your plan for this ginkgo?

I wold love to see it in a shape ... kinda like a poplar. Something like this.



But will see of the tree wants that. . As I understand ginkgo's don't like to much to be hard pruned. There is not much info on this type of bonsai but it seems to do ok for now.
I hope it will put the back budding in order to do that. As I can see (for now) this tree is not to great on back buds. But hopefully will see that when the foliage will increase.

I have a bunch of ginkgo s I grew from seed. Now in their secnd year. So will happily follow your experience with this species

Spring #2

Hello Claudiu, your tree has developed a nice strong new leader branch in just one year!. I've got a little forest of very young Ginkgos that I have repotted in early spring 2018, just dropped their leaves after being so gorgeous in fall 2018 and now are budding again but with no further branch forming at all.
Probably I should have grown them individually in a much bigger pot for a few years...

Ohhh .... that fall colors. Cool Ricky. I see that your fortunate to have a yard. Maybe I will some day ......
Just pruned it a little to get some movement in the future branches because I don't see this as a tree suitable for wiring ... they snap like dried twigs when bend.
That's no biggy, I prefer the cut and growth technique anyway. I think it makes the trees look way more natural.
As I found out on my own, these ginkgo's don't like the pruning on woody branches when leaves have emerged. So I will do that in the winter ... for now on.

Hi Claudiu… yes Ginkgos are not supposed to be wired normally - I have applied just one thin wire on a small branch (starting from the trunk) to give it a better movement - but I'm watching it carefully and adding no more… Actually I now need to check if this is of any use by now, and could remove it...
In fact the problem is that my little Ginkgos develop a gorgeous foliage, with great fall colour, which then drops in autumn, without adding further ramification… it's going to be a veeeery slow process indeed

PS No unfortunately I do not have a yard… I live in downtown Milan, and all my little trees are on a terrace which is in the worst possible position.
During summer, it is fully shaded in the morning and under the hottest and strongest sunlight in the afternoon, from 12:00 to 18:30.
But, so far, they have been surviving - though my Acer Palmatum loses all the autumn beauty as most Leaves get scorched by sun and heat (up to 40°C) in summer, despite the careful watering.
The yard in the pic is that of a holiday home where I've done the repotting of the Ginkgos….

Ahh ok. I can't understand why no ramification. I will post another pic in this fall (after the leaves fall off) and I think that from this 2 buds present now, I will get many more. Already 2 are emerging lower on those 2 little branches.
