I was looking for where I posted pictures of my larch, but I couldn't find the thread, and am pretty sure that it was in a thread about something else.. so I'm opening a new thread.

The first thing I'm trying to do is decide on a front... I'm not sure... I like the first option, because the main trunk is more visible, the main problem with it is that the apex moves towards the observer if this is the front.

The second option I like because the apex seems more natural but the three trunks are covered.
the third and fourth pictures are from this morning. the first two are from July/August.
a couple more pictures from this morning showing the side of the tree.

It needs a repot in spring, but I'm also going to have to cut back a bit more than I did this last year.

What are your thoughts about the front?

Hi T-boy,

nice tree. So what I would do is to cut the left, lower branch (1st picture)and create some deadwood off that branch.
Rotate it a little counterclockwise and make the foliage less dens. Make the top much "lighter"
but it's hard to see on the picture, would need to see the tree in real life.

I like the general idea, LB, I've been thinking the two side trunks are too strong.

Yes, but if you direct them closer to the main trunk as LB suggested I guess it will become more harmonious.

I don't think so. Remove the left one (the thinnest one) and you get something like this with two strong trunks.Well, not exactly, just to get an idea. Also not saying you should remove the left trunk. I just couldn't find a better example :)

Which ever direction I take, I am going to have to do some thinning out between the trunks... I'd kind of like to keep it at three, mainly because the middle trunk is pretty straight... My first priorities will be repotting, and then thinning out a bit... I've heard that larches don't like too much rootwork.. how much of the ball can I remove? and how much of the old soil needs to stay in? in your experience?

I am not confident to give amount of rootbal to remove. I clean out the roots as much as possible without doing major damage. The long roots are pruned to a side-root. And I loko at individual roots in the nebari whethe rthey need editing. I might take half a metre of root off a single root. Basically I try to get the rootball to fit the container without bending the roots. But as said.. I trim larch to side-roots wherever possible.
