Hey All,

I have the option to dig some hibiscus. It is a bit of a drive, add a crate of beer and the work of digging them out of season.. Do you think there is potential for this as bonsai? Wasting time? Or a great opportunity?

I would look at these and say I would have to chop too much off. You would chop them down to 10 cm and have show winners in a year.

Actually, it would depend on the root ball. If all the fine roots are at the end of a 2 meter tap root, no. Otherwise why not? All you need is somewhere to put another dozen. About half look like good potential and those are decent odds.

Thx Ivan, that is what I thought. But appearently I am the only who thinks it is interesting to look at potential for collecting. So I decided to not repeat what I wrote for my blog here.

I have many friends around retirement age or at least empty nest stage who are thinking about reworking their yards. I have been invited over to look at digging trees up for them.

Lesson: talk around and people may invite you over to get a thirty year old tree, free. Not a bad deal.
