Jacaranda are all over where I live, they have gorgeous purple flowers in the spring, and they grow really fast so I decided to do try a clump style bonsai. The local nursery already had pre assembled clumps of saplings that we're braided together. I don't like how braids look after they are grown so I took the saplings apart and re-bound them.

I bought two, this is what they looked like when I bought it.

I took the knot off and unwound the braid.

I gently separated the saplings, gave them a mist, and cut some tap roots.

I then bundled them really tight at the bottom, and on one individual i also put a wire a couple inches above the bottom wire.

I then potted them in a compost, lava rock, and vermiculite mix.

I think these trees will explode this year. The tree in the background is a Jacaranda and it was cut a year and a half ago and has about 10 feet of new growth.

Saludos!

Nice project.

I am not sure abou this species for bonsai; To me, the leaves are too large.

Had you considered wiring the individual plants so the harmonize together better?

One of my projects in 2018, similar:

I agree with leatherback, the leaves are a bit large.

They are large leafs, and I imagine it will take many years to get enough ramification to have small leaves. The Bonsai Empire Spanish website actually has a page of information on this species and a picture of a beautiful big specimen. www.bonsaiempire.es/especies/jacaranda.

@leatherback I am going to wait until May for the branches to weld together then I will wire the branches like you did.

They do make nice bonsai , just need to keep cutting back during growing season, the only thing is I haven't had success in flowering.

Awesome future clump Bonsai, I've heard they are kind of sensitive to pruning, that too much pruning can make the plant stagnate for some time... Where I live (South of Brazil) there are many Jacarandá everywhere, I have a huge respect for that species, got some seeds germinating now, they are kind of easy to, but fingers crossed anyways.

Here they come!
Planted over 50 seeds last week, and a dozen already showed up today...
Looking forward for a clump style Jac. too.
Keep us up on your progress. Cheers.

These trees were doing very well last year after I prepared them, but i left in March for 10 days to the field, in the driest part of the year and they did not get watered. I got back and all the trees were dead.

How many trees do I have to kill until I figure this out?
