Fig trees cannot cope with living room conditions. It needs to be outside. If it gets really cold in winter it will need some protection.

Regarding how to keep it small is universal and not soo much species dependent. The answer is prunning.

Most fig trees are tropical and cannot handle frost. Best to first establish the species. Do you have a picture?

I was refering to common fig, ficus carica. Basically hardy to usda zone 8, but there are a few cultivars hardy to zone 6. Zone 6-8 all experience frost every year. If you mean any other ficus tree please tell species name.

Hi Rizzi,

These plants are tropical and should be protected from temperatures below 10C. Over 10C you can consider putting it outside. It will welcome the change although sunburn is a risk: You need to transition slowly to the sun, with a good period (weeks) under other trees or in the shade of a building.

The leaves are however so large that making a realistic bonsai out of them .. Is not going to work I am afraid
