Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know of one of the project I have been working on for a month or two now. As the plant was in poor condition,. I decided to wait with posting about it.

In one of the garden centra I came across a nice worn down hasel. The plant looked sickly, but for 3,99 beggers can´t be choosers... So I clipped the plant down (The full thing was over 2 meters tall) and took it home.

Some clipping later, and there was improvement in the looks department. I planted the ting in the garden, and let it grow for the last weeks. The result..

Hi Keith,

It looks like you have worked your magic once again! Well done! And, what a deal for 3.99!!! :cheer:
Is the plant's name pronounced "Hazel"?
If this tree was over 2m in height (about 7 feet), you must have chopped it down to 1/3 of that, .8m (about 2.5 feet) in height?

Sorry...although we adopted the metric system of measure years ago here, I learned the standard imperial measure in elementary school and have never been able to make that switch in my head. So to visualize a measure in metric I have to use my slide convertor to translate it into feet, inches, etc. Math never was my strength after the switch. :S

Anyway...how many of the original branches did you keep? I can see one branch in the photo and one wound where a branch was removed right at the base however, I know you removed a lot more than one. The new growth is wonderful! I look forward to following this progression. Thank you for sharing! :)

Keith? Who is keith?

Yeah, hazel, as in hazel nuts?

I think I chopped it down more than that. The thich trunck section is about 1 feet (30cm). And what I chopped? Some 5 or six branches; You see the mark of one of them at soil level. THere were a bunch of branched that size. Also, the place where the trunck gets a lot thinner is a cut-mark. These cuts are the reason I have let it sprout where it wants untill now: I will give it untill summer next year or so in the full soil to grow out, so it can heal these wounds over a little. After the big spring growth I will have to decide what it will be like. Most likely in winter I will remove a lot of the growth on the base, n order to avoid bigger scars. For now they add to tapering the trunck a bit more. But wat I really want is the thin top branch to bulk up a bit and cover the large (3-4cm across) cut-mark where I remove the main branch.

Sorry Jelle...I got your name confused with *manofthetrees-keith*

Thank you for your answers. It helps me to better visualize this tree as it is now and, where you want to go with it. :)

LOL here i am...i do believe any tree can be reduced to some extent.the more ramification the more leaves there are to absorb light ,the smaller they have to be to sustain the plant
