Hello ppl.
Just droping by to share my new project.
This Calliandra came from a cutting, I have been Just letting it grow and prunning back once in a while, since they don't heal cuts too well...

Last intervention I made, was prunning it's roots, since the cutting was too long and rooted on many spots. So roots are now shallow, as the container, also organized them flared out.

This is my first time training this small.
So I don't plan to makes any contest winner, but I'm enjoying the way this little guy is coming out...

Cheers.

Hello ppl!

Just a little update on this small Calliandra...
I did some selection some time ago, and it gave me that lower branch on a convenient position.
A few months ago I took advantage of it's winter slowdown to wire it, and position primary branches.

So today I just changed it's soil, the flaring of the roots worked well, nebari is starting to look good, so I prunned the roots shorter to keep it compact.

Yep, it doesn't have much taper on the trunk, so that's what I'm gonna aim this season, thickening the lower branch so I can get the base a little thicker, the flared out root might help on that.

This species doesn't close the wounds too well, therefore I'm avoiding big cuts.

I'm really enjoying going this small, and already have other projects going on!

Cheers, have a great week!

Nice little tree. But now, get it into a pot. Exposed roots are nice, but at some point you need to get growing tips into substrate ;)

Hahaha, thanks LB , just a pause on the process for a quick picture you know, it's always a suprise to see how it developed the roots.
The base still a bit under the substrate level, pot is now a little bit bigger, but not by much, let's hope it improves!

Do you always remove all the old soil during repotting?

Hey Frank!

Not always, that depends a lot on the species and on the stage of the tree...

When the species is tolerant to it, and on early development I do remove all the soil, so I can select the roots properly since I still building it's Nebari.

Conifers for example I wouldn't do it hahaha, Jabuticaba I also avoid to, as they take a while to response to that.
Caliandras, Ficuses and BRTs on the other hand are tought, they respond very well if done on a proper season.
But sometimes when roots are already kind of selected and it's a up pot, I would just untangle a bit, remove the more external soil and roots and pot it.

I also would do it when the tree is from Yamadori or field-grown and already sat on a pot for a year or two after removal, because there still some packed field soil in the inner part...
