here is my viburnum.I was looking for something different that flowers so i picked this little one up in Febuary.it had moss growing half way up the trunk and no leaves so i had really no idea what i was dealing with. it is in a koban shaped pot that is 5 1/2 in long, the nebari is 4in wide and the tree is 8in from the soil




this is mid march after i cleaned up the nebari and leat the leaves fil out





mid april after a lite pruning and wire...

My one concern is the leaf size i am testing defoliating to see how she reacts
so far its OK and I will be trying more drastic measures in the future

Looking nice! Leaf size will reduce with the years probably, but defoliation might speed this up a bit. Keep us posted!

The transformation is great. You are doing a great job. The leaf size will decrease by pruning over time.Leaf size will be reduced if you continuously pinch out the new growth. Pinching will also encourage a stronger lower growth. It is best to remove individual branches to encourage a production of new branches within 1-2 weeks.

well everything i know about leaf reduction has been trown out the window with this one I pick the big ones off they grow back bigger quite weird. I aslo discovered they don't like sun. I finally put them outside ( the night temps are finally above 40)in a place with only morning sun and it scorched the leaves that'll show them for not reducing

With leaf reduction you pick all the leaves off, not only the big ones, the tree is not prepared to produce new leaves, and it has only a bit reserve energy, that's why the tree makes smaller leaves.

Cut only the leaves off and not the leaf stalks or you can damage the bark of the tree! After some days the leaf stalk will automatically fall off

I'm wondering...if I understand this correctly, is Anne suggesting you cut off all existing branches to promote new branching? If so, this art sure requires a lot of courage! LOL! Thanks so much for sharing!
