howdy y'all,

ive posted this tre elswere but figured id start a new thread to show its progress. this is the first time ive actually done foliage refinement on a coniferous species. to make a long story short,i just followd the basic bonsai rules of bonsai structure and cut all up and downward facing buds/branches and made sure all branches were alternating left and right and then wired. it turned out pretty awesome and now looks like a bonsai tree and not just wired nursery stock.im happy with the results.now just to wait to fill in and find a pot for next spring. well here it is...

looking good its gonna take a while for the pads to fill up but just let it grow for a couple of seasons with some minor maintenance pruning and it will look like a real bonsai even more.
Overal design looks promising!

looks great! I think that the back side is more interesting though. The large branches you cut could become some interesting jin and shari. The roots on the backside are also more striking. Just my thoughts.

jelle , yes it was fun even tho it took a almost a week of a little here a little there. i also learned alot, the japanese "rules" make alot more sence

SaaV , yes i thought the back was more interesting i have some of the stubs wired for direction to be jinned later. the pic is not quite the front it would have to be turned more to the left to show the correct position.the roots are to be placed opposite the cascading branch so they will be off to the right side

The styling of the tree looks good, but I sincerely hope this tree is gonna survive. It looks like you cut back a lot of foliage in one go. This is fine for pines and spruces, but junipers (and especially Procumbens) needs foliage in order to keep saps flowing or they will suffer from serious die-back. I'm not sure if you kept enough on there for the the tree to survive. The first time I styled a juniper i made the same mistake. Mine died.

this is the main reason for not disturbing the roots. the last juni i had i did roots and branches at once and it died.the tree was pushing new growth and was very healthy this is the reason i did so much. shape had to be defined if this was going to be a suitable bonsai. in the last week i have gone through twice pinching the explosion of growth.this one isnt dieing this year

You said You followed the rules??? I believe the branches go left right and top...You maybe forgot to mention the top bit. Then the first branch on a cascade is always a back branch...I would have tried to bend it some more, and by doing that so change the front, so that large branch is at the back.
